Baseball Drops Midweek Conference Clash to Mount Saint Vincent

YAPHANK, N.Y. — Following their postponement on Sunday afternoon, the St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) baseball team and the University of Mount Saint Vincent saw action on Wednesday afternoon at Lasorda Legacy Park. The Bears fell 7-12 in game one and 6-10 in game two.

How it Happened (Game 1)

The Bears came out firing in the bottom of the first inning, plating three runs to take an early 3-0 lead. Christopher Stegmuller (Baldwin, N.Y.) drove in a pair thanks to his double. The Dolphins responded in the top of the third with a three-run frame to tie the game. A pair of walks and a single set the table before a sacrifice fly and an RBI groundout brought the Dolphins even, 3-3.

In the fifth, the Dolphins pulled ahead with two more runs to make it 5-3. A Matt Arcati (Brooklyn, N.Y.) run in the bottom of the fifth was sandwiched between another Dolphin run in the sixth to extend their lead to 6-4.

The Bears clawed back with a three-run frame in the bottom of the sixth. Stegmuller trimmed the deficit to 6-5 with a single before Chris Perez (Bronx, N.Y.) reclaimed the lead on a two-RBI stand-up double from Chris Perez (Bronx, N.Y.). However, UMSV erupted for six runs in the seventh, taking advantage of a pair of SJBK errors in the inning and putting the game out of reach at 12-6.

How it Happened (Game 2)

The game remained scoreless through the first two innings but in the bottom of the third, the Bears broke through in a big way. A pair of hit batsmen with the bases loaded put St. Joseph's on the board. Stegmuller doubled down the left field line to plate two more runs before Michael Gardener (Farmingdale, N.Y.) drove in the Bears' fifth run of the frame.

The visitors used a three-run fourth inning to eat at the SJBK lead, ultimately reducing it to 5-4 after four-and-a-half innings. The Bears added a run in the bottom of the fifth to hold a slim 6-4 edge.

Mount Saint Vincent swung the lead into their favor thanks to six runs over the next two innings as they swept the doubleheader
