PURCHASE, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. – Brooklyn softball team earned 13-4 and 11-3 wins over Purchase College on Friday afternoon.
How it Happened (Game 1)
Singles by Lauren Van Der Kamp (Sacramento, Calif.) and Vivian Garcia (Eastvale, Calif.) gave the Bears a 2-0 lead through two innings, but Purchase responded in the bottom half, scoring three runs to take a 3-2 advantage.
The third inning saw the Bears plate a pair to regain the lead but the Panthers again tied the contest in the fourth, 4-4.
In the top of the fifth, St. Joseph's Brooklyn broke the game wide open with a nine-run outburst. Capitalizing on multiple defensive miscues and timely hitting, the Bears sent 13 batters to the plate, collecting five hits while drawing a pair of walks, turning a 4-4 tie into a 13-4 lead and, ultimately, the win.
How it Happened (Game 2)
Van Der Kamp's first-inning single brought in a pair of runs, and RBI hits from Leila Heller (Belle Chasse, La.) and Audrey Scott (Rocklin, Calif.) extended the lead to 4-0. Purchase responded with a run in the bottom half and another in the second to cut the deficit to 4-2.
Autumn Poppett (San Diego, Calif.) delivered a two-run single in the fourth to make it 6-2, but the Panthers again pulled within three in their half of the inning.
St. Joseph's pulled away for good in the fifth, racking up six hits and five runs, with Vivian Garcia, Poppett, Kiara Coy (Clifton, N.J.), and Brielle Nelson (Chandler, Ariz.) all driving in runs to seal the 11-3 win.
For the Bears (Game 1)

Scott delivered three RBI and a pair of runs, batting 2-for-4.

Garcia also finished 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Heller had three hits in the game and scored as many runs.

Van Der Kamp and Poppett each had 1-for-4 games with two RBI and a run scored.

Payton Walker (Eastvale, Calif.) had a pair of hits and scored once.

Makena Burr (Foster City, Calif.) totaled four strikeouts as she improved to 11-6 on the season.
For the Bears (Game 2)

Heller again went 3-for-4 at the dish, scoring twice and driving home a run.

Poppett had three RBI and batted 2-for-4.

Garcia also batted in two as she batted 1-for-4.

Van Der Kamp and Scott went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Van Der Kamp batted in two while Scott drove in a run.

Nelson scored thrice.

Heller earned the win in the circle (7-5), striking out two.
