BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, New York (Brooklyn) began Skyline Conference play with a straight-set win over Yeshiva University on Wednesday night at The Hill Center, 3–0 (25–14, 25–9, 25–18).
The Bears built early momentum in the first set behind multiple service aces, including a pair from Taylor Knight (San Ramon, Calif.), to move ahead 18–9. Jillian McGinty (Glendale, N.Y.) and Keren Crespo (Meriden, Conn.) combined for key kills late in the frame as St. Joseph's closed it out, 25–14.
The second set proved decisive as Abigail Encinia's (Sunnyvale, Texas) serving run helped the Bears pull away. She notched three of her team-high six aces during the stretch, while Carissa Zwiefelhofer (North Bend, Wash.) and Crespo chipped in at the net. St. Joseph's committed only three errors in the frame and won 25–9.
Yeshiva kept the third set much closer, tying the score six times, but St. Joseph's pulled ahead late with kills from Encinia and Crespo. Juliette DiVittorio (Astoria, N.Y.) capped the night with a service ace, and Crespo finished the match with a kill to seal the 25–18 result
Encinia led the Bears with eight kills and six aces. Crespo contributed six kills and five digs, while Zwiefelhofer tallied five kills, seven assists, and two block assists. Mariana Medrano (El Paso, Texas) led the defense with nine digs to go with two aces, and Rachel Meltsin (Brooklyn, N.Y.) dished out seven assists, matching Zwiefelhofer and Medrano. As a team, St. Joseph's totaled 21 service aces compared to the Maccabees' four.
