Women’s Volleyball Sweeps CCNY; Earns Fifth Straight Win

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) women's volleyball team earned its sixth win of the season, and fifth in a row, with a straight-set victory over the City College of New York on Monday night at The Hill Center, taking the match 3–0 (25–17, 25–17, 25–16).

St. Joseph's started quickly in the opening set, jumping out to a 4–0 lead; continuing to apply pressure, led by the rookie trio of Carissa Zwiefelhofer (North Bend, Wa.), Keren Crespo (Meriden, Conn.) and Abigail Encinia (Sunnyvale, Texas), to stretch their advantage to 13–7. CCNY pulled within three at 18-15, but Bears secured seven of the last nine points, capped off by a Zwiefelhofer kill, to win the frame 25–17.

The second set began with an 8-2 scoring spurt from SJBK; sparked a 6–0 run with a kill and an ace. Knight, Crespo, and Zwiefelhofer contributed kills in the middle stages, and Mariana Medrano (El Paso, Texas) delivered a service ace to make it 17–10. CCNY rallied late to within five, 22-17, but a pair of kills followed by an ace from Rachel Meltsin (Brooklyn, N.Y.) sealed back-to-back 25-17 sets.

In the third, St. Joseph's raced ahead 6–2 on back-to-back Crespo kills and a Knight ace. CCNY trimmed the margin to two at 10–8, but the Bears answered with an extended stretch capped by a McGinty service ace to make it 21–15. From there, St. Joseph's closed out the match behind a balanced attack, with Encinia registering the final kill for a 25–16 decision.

Zwiefelhofer led the SJBK attack with 11 kills and added six assists, while Crespo posted 10 kills to mark a season-best. Meltsin dished out a match-high 16 assists while Knight totaled seven kills, three aces, and 13 digs. Encinia recorded nine assists, four kills, and two aces. Defensively, Medrano anchored the back row with 19 digs, and Juliette DiVittorio (Astoria, N.Y.) chipped in 11.
