YONKERS, N.Y. — Despite a pair of goals from Joaquin Franco (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and a strong second-half effort, the St. Joseph's University, New York (Brooklyn) men's soccer team fell to Sarah Lawrence College, 3–2, on Saturday evening from Fleming Field.
The Bears created opportunities early, with Franco registering two shots in the opening 12 minutes, but the Gryphons struck three times between the 15th and 22nd minutes to take a commanding lead. Franco pulled one back in the 42nd minute, cutting the deficit to 3–1 at halftime.
SJBK increased its attacking pressure after the break, with Jared Nereo Flores (Brooklyn, N.Y.) striking the post in the 61st minute. Franco then netted his second goal of the match in the 63rd minute, assisted by Francisco Garcia (Brooklyn, N.Y.), to bring the Bears within one. The Bears continued searching for an equalizer but could not find the breakthrough as Sarah Lawrence held on for the victory.
Franco finished with two goals on seven shots, including five on target. Flores added four shots, while Garcia recorded an assist. Matthew Galetta (Bohemia, N.Y.) made four saves in 68 minutes of scoreless relief as SJBK outshot Sarah Lawrence 19–9 overall.
The Bears return to action Wednesday, October 14, traveling to face Yeshiva University at 4:30 p.m.
