FARMINGDALE, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, New York (Brooklyn) women's soccer team fell 2-1 to Yeshiva University on Wednesday afternoon at Farmingdale State College.
Yeshiva struck early, with Naomi Sigman finding the back of the net within the opening three minutes. Both squads combined for 15 shots in the first half, while the Maccabees held a 7-3 advantage in shots on target. Sigman doubled her tally just over a minute before halftime, giving Yeshiva a 2-0 lead heading into the break.
The Bears generated more attacking opportunities in the second half, with first-year Jaylene Verdugo (East Elmhurst, N.Y.) sparking the comeback effort. With 22:22 remaining, Verdugo collected a short pass from classmate Pamela Jadan (East Elmhurst, N.Y.) and chipped the ball over Yeshiva goalkeeper Rena Neiger to score her first collegiate goal and cut the deficit to one.
Despite their efforts, the Bears were unable to find an equalizer as the Maccabees' defense held firm to secure the 2-1 victory.
Verdugo and Lindsay Dominguez (Bellerose, N.Y.) led St. Joseph's with three shots apiece, combining for five shots on target. Goalkeeper Isabella Argento (Levittown, N.Y.) finished with eight saves, three more than Yeshiva's Rena Neiger, who entered the contest ranked first nationally in saves per game.
The Bears will celebrate Senior Day on Saturday, October 17, at 2 p.m. when they host SUNY Purchase.
