NEWBURGH, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, New York (Brooklyn) women's basketball team battled through a Skyline Conference road contest Tuesday night, falling 72–60 to Mount Saint Mary College.
The Knights established control early, building a first-quarter advantage behind an efficient shooting percentage of 60 percent. Emma Centrella (Varese, Italy) converted inside to get the Bears on the board first before the hosts, behind an 11-0 run, carried a 20–7 lead after one.
St. Joseph's settled in during the second quarter, tightening defensively and finding rhythm from the perimeter. Mercedes Perez (San Antonio, Texas) knocked down a three-pointer while Aaniya Telford (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Domenika Sanchez (Guayaquil, Ecuador) also connected from deep to help trim the margin before halftime as the Bears continued to chip away, 40-25.
The Bears continued to battle in the third quarter, trading baskets with the Knights as the tempo picked up. Jasmine Chan-Clayton (Melbourne, Australia) connected from the perimeter, and Sanchez provided energy off the bench to keep SJBK within reach, but MSMC maintained its advantage, 55-41, entering the final period.
St. Joseph's continued to press in the final period, ultimately outscoring Mount Saint Mary 35-32 in the second half. Chan-Clayton and Centrella spearheaded the offense but the Knights held on to secure the home win.
Centrella led the Bears with 16 points while adding seven rebounds. Chan-Clayton finished with 11 points and Perez added 10 points. Sanchez and Telford each scored six while Kristen Donovan (Maspeth, N.Y.) led the game with nine rebounds. Gabriella Cinque (Staten Island, N.Y.) added seven boards.
The Bears conclude their road slate on Sunday, February 15 against Yeshiva University from Baruch College. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 pm.
