BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) defeated SUNY Old Westbury, 61-56, in their final game of the season at The Hill Center on Saturday. The Bears bid adieu to seniors JJ Abraham (Staten Island, N.Y.), Justin Nazon (Staten Island, N.Y.), Adam Jasaraj (Staten Island, N.Y.), and Jonathan Reno (Staten Island, N.Y.) prior to the game before the quartet proceeded to combine for 25 points and 24 rebounds.
The Bears settled in after the opening possessions and found its rhythm from the perimeter. Jasaraj tied the game at 3–3 with a triple at 18:20, and Nazon followed moments later with another three at 18:07 to give the Bears their first lead. Jacob Idowu (Wiesbaden, Germany) added a jumper inside at 16:50, and Reno converted in transition at 12:17 as St. Joseph's gradually built separation. The Bears controlled the tempo for the remainder of the half, limiting second-chance opportunities and finishing possessions efficiently to carry a 33–24 advantage into the locker room.
In the second half, the Bears maintained pressure on both ends. Nazon and Idowu scored in the paint early to keep the lead secure, and SJBK built its largest edge at 15:52 on another Nazon three-ball. Old Westbury closed within a possession midway through the second frame, forcing the Bears to rely on free throws and strong defense. With under two minutes remaining and St. Joseph's clinging to a narrow advantage, free throws from Colin Mills (White Plains, N.Y.) and Justin Munson (Middle Village, N.Y.) sealed the win for the Bears.
Mills scored 23 points in the victory while Idowu finished with eight points and a team-high 15 rebounds. The senior class combined for 25 points and 24 rebounds in the victory, led by Nazon's 16 points and Jasaraj's 13 boards, seven of which coming on the offensive glass.
The Bears hit the road for the final two games of the regular season, beginning on Wednesday, February 18 at 7:30 pm at St. Joseph's (Long Island).Â
