SJLI Hangs On Against Men's Basketball

PATCHOGUE, N.Y — The St. Joseph's University, New York (Brooklyn) men's basketball team fell to its sister school, St. Joseph's (Long Island), 60-55, on Wednesday night.

The Bears jumped out to an early 6-0 lead thanks to a pair of three pointers from Colin Mills (White Plains, N.Y.) and Maven Cummings (Brooklyn, N.Y.). The Golden Eagles clawed their way back and take a 24-12 lead with 7:56 remaining in the first half. A low scoring, defensive first half ultimately saw the Golden Eagles on top 36-21 at the half.

The two teams traded baskets for the first 10 minutes of the second half until layups from Justin Nazon and Mills cut the Golden Eagle lead to seven with 8:16 remaining, 48-41. Patchogue answered and extend their lead to 11 before layups from Blaise Corozzo (Howard Beach, N.Y.) and Jacob Idowu (Wiesbaden, Germany) would cut the deficit back to seven with 5:44, 52-45. The sides continued to exchange field goals with a three from Mills to put Brooklyn within two possessions with under four minutes left. A three from Idowu narrowed the Bears' deficit to 56-53 with 66 seconds left in regulation. However, the Golden Eagles knocked down four free throws down the stretch to seal the victory by a score of 60-55.

Mills led the way for the Bears with 18 points. Idowu added nine points and six rebounds while Justin Nazon added nine boards and three assists of his own.

The Bears close out the regular season on Saturday, February 21 at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy with tipoff scheduled for 1 p.m.
