BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, New York (Brooklyn) women's basketball team closed its home slate before the holiday stretch with a 56–51 Skyline Conference victory over Mount Saint Vincent on Saturday afternoon at The Hill Center.
The Bears got out to a solid start in the first quarter as Kristen Donovan (Maspeth, N.Y.) and Nikki Grech (Northville, Mich.) led the offense, helping SJBK build an early advantage and take a 16–13 edge after one.
St. Joseph's continued to play with pace in the second period. Mercedes Perez (San Antonio, Texas) knocked down a pair of triples in the period; including a corner three at the buzzer. Jasmine Chan-Clayton (Melbourne, Australia) also provided an offensive spark as the Bears carried a 29–22 advantage into halftime.
The back-and-forth third quarter saw SJBK hold its composure despite Mount Saint Vincent hot shooting. Donovan kept the offense humming from distance, and Perez continued to attack off the dribble. With 4:26 remaining in the period, Perez banked a floater just outside the paint to eclipse 1000 points. The Bears remained in front 43–36 entering the final period.
Mount Saint Vincent trimmed the lead to as little as one on a pair of occasions in the fourth, but the Bears responded with timely baskets and key defensive stops. Aaniya Telford (Brooklyn, N.Y.) hit a free throw and drew a charge in the final moments of the contest while she, and Perez, spearheaded the offense to hold off the Dolphins and secure the five-point home win.
Donovan led the Bears with 17 points, connecting on four of her nine triples and pacing the offense. Perez facilitated the attack with 16 points, becoming the second Bear this season (following Donovan) to reach the 1000-point mark. Grech contributed 12 points and collected a game-leading 18 boards. She also had four steals and three blocks.
The Bears travel to Mount Saint Mary College on Tuesday night, February 10. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 pm.
