BRONXVILLE, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, New York (Brooklyn) men's volleyball team earned a Skyline Conference road victory on Tuesday night, defeating Sarah Lawrence College, 3–1 (15–25, 25–23, 25–15, 25–18) at the Campbell Sports Center.
The Gryphons controlled the opening set, using an early run to build separation. The Bears were unable to recover from the deficit as the hosts maintained their advantage throughout, taking the frame, 25–15.
St. Joseph's responded in the second set with a much more balanced effort. After falling behind early, the Bears settled in offensively behind Jeremias Martinez (Elmhurst, N.Y.) and Etvola Sango (Kinshasa, DR Congo), who combined for eight kills in the stanza to gradually close the gap. A late push flipped the momentum, and St. Joseph's edged the Gryphons, 25–23, to even the match.
The third set saw the Bears take full control, establishing the lead early and extending it behind consistent attacking and improved efficiency in transition. With Jack Buscaglia (Hackensack, N.J.) distributing effectively, the Bears pulled away comfortably to claim the set, 25–15, and take a 2–1 match advantage. They continued to dictate play in the fourth, creating separation during the middle portion of the set, capitalizing on extended rallies and limiting Sarah Lawrence's scoring runs. Maintaining their cushion down the stretch, the Bears closed out the match with a 25–18 set win.
Martinez paced the Bears offensively, logging 23 kills to go with 10 digs. Trey DeMeo (Barnegat, N.J.) followed with 11 kills and Sango with nine. Buscaglia also logged a double-double with 38 assists and 12 digs. Matthew Cottone (Oakdale, N.Y.) anchored the back row with a match-best 19 digs.
The Bears conclude the regular season with the four seed in the Skyline Conference Tournament on the line on Saturday, April 4 at 12 pm against the University of Mount Saint Vincent in Riverdale.
