Men's Volleyball Returns to Win Column at Old Westbury

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, New York (Brooklyn) men's volleyball team earned a Skyline Conference road win on Thursday night, sweeping Old Westbury, 3–0 (25–23, 25–15, 25–22), at the Clark Athletic Center.

The opening set was the tightest of the night. The Bears hit .231 in the frame and held off Old Westbury late to claim the two-point decision, 25-23. Jeremias Martinez (Elmhurst, N.Y.) paced the Bears' attack with 12 kills in the set, as the Bears did enough offensively in the opener to overcome 10 Panther kills.

St. Joseph's gained firmer control in the second set, turning in its most efficient set of the match at a .318 clip while limiting Old Westbury to a .120 hitting percentage. The Bears finished with 11 kills against just four errors in the set and pulled away for a 25–15 win to move within a frame of the sweep.

The third set was more competitive, featuring six ties and a lead change. SJBK closed the match by producing its highest kill total of the night; recording 18 kills in the frame and hit .282. Martinez posted seven kills followed by four from Corey Zaccagna (Barnegat, N.J.) and three from Ian McIntosh (Flushing, N.Y.) The Bears answered Old Westbury's pushes before finishing off the 25–22 set win to complete the straight-sets victory.

Martinez led all players with 23 kills while hitting .462, and he added three service aces. Zaccagna followed with seven kills, while Richard Ortega (Roselle, N.J.) added five kills. Jack Buscaglia (Hackensack, N.J.) directed the offense with 36 assists, added two aces, and chipped in six digs. Defensively, Matthew Cottone (Oakdale, N.Y.) led the Bears with 10 digs.

The Bears continue Skyline play on Saturday, March 7, with a 12 p.m. match at Manhattanville University.
