Box Score PURCHASE, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, New York (Brooklyn) men's volleyball team earned their second Skyline Conference road win on Saturday afternoon, sweeping Manhattanville University 3–0 (27–25, 25–12, 29–27).
The opening set was tightly contested from the start, with neither side able to build more than a two-point cushion through the middle portion of the frame. The Bears stayed within reach behind early swings from Jeremias Martinez (Elmhurst, N.Y.) before a late rally tied the set in the twenties. After the Valiants briefly reached set point, the Bears responded with key kills from Martinez and Mark Belov (Brooklyn, N.Y.), closing the extended frame 27–25.
The Bears pieced together a decisive mid-set run in the second, turning a narrow early lead into a double-digit advantage. Trey DeMeo (Barnegat, N.J.) and Mark Belov (Brooklyn, N.Y.) each produced point-ending swings during the decisive stretch while Jack Buscaglia (Hackensack, N.J.) spread the offense. The surge allowed the Bears to pull away comfortably and claim the set 25–12.
The third set returned to the back-and-forth pace of the opener, featuring 11 ties and six separate lead changes. Manhattanville kept the score tight throughout the frame as both teams traded points into the late twenties. Martinez provided key offense down the stretch following an SJBK timeout to allow the Bears regain momentum. With the set tied at 27, St. Joseph's converted two consecutive points in transition, capped off by a Martinez kill, to secure the 29–27 win and complete the sweep.
DeMeo led the Bears with 10 kills, while Martinez followed with nine kills, two aces, and eight digs. Belov added five kills on .625 hitting and a team-high three blocks. Belov totaled five kills and three blocks and Corey Zaccagna (Barnegat, N.J.) logged four. Buscaglia directed the offense with 25 assists while adding seven digs, and Matthew Cottone (Oakdale, N.Y.) anchored the back row with 10 digs.
The Bears return to The Hill Center on Wednesday, March 11 at 7 pm against the University of Mount Saint Vincent.
