NEW YORK — Jeremias Martinez (Elmhurst, N.Y./Newtown) and Trey DeMeo (Barnegat, N.J./Barnegat) were named Skyline Conference men's volleyball weekly honorees on Monday afternoon, as announced by the league office in its final report of the season.
Martinez earned Player of the Week honors for the third time this season, marking the most such awards in a single season in program history. The sophomore right side averaged 4.88 kills per set and totaled 39 kills as the Bears went 2-0 against Sarah Lawrence and Mount Saint Vincent. He posted a double-double with 23 kills and 10 digs against the Gryphons, then added 16 kills, four digs, and an ace versus the Dolphins.
With 293 kills on the year, Martinez is six shy of matching his own program single-season record set last season. He also ranks second in the conference with 4.13 kills per set and fourth with a .245 hitting percentage.
After previously earning Honorable Mention this season, DeMeo picked up Skyline Rookie of the Week honors. Averaging three kills per set last week, the first-year outside hitter recorded 11 kills and four digs against the Gryphons, then followed with 13 kills on a .524 hitting percentage and four digs versus the Dolphins. He is averaging 2.67 kills per set this season, ranking second on the team and 10th in the conference, while his 7.29 attacks per set place him seventh in the league.
Martinez and DeMeo helped the Bears to a program-best 11-9 overall record and an 8-6 mark in conference play, securing a spot in the Skyline Conference Championship. As the No. 4 seed, the Bears will travel to Patchogue to take on top-seeded St. Joseph's (Long Island) on Wednesday, April 8 at 7 p.m. Tickets for the match are available online via this link, and additional tournament information can be found on the Skyline Conference website (here).
