Baseball Handed Narrow Defeats by Purchase

PURCHASE, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, New York (Brooklyn) baseball team dropped both ends of a Sunday afternoon doubleheader to Purchase College, falling 0–2 in the opener before losing 5–8 in game two.

Game 1

Game one was a tightly contested, low-scoring matchup. The Panthers got on the board with a run on a groundout in the third inning and added another on an infield single in the fifth. The Bears were held to just four hits, recorded by Christopher Stegmuller (Baldwin, N.Y.), William King (Springfield Gardens, N.Y.), Matt Arcati (Brooklyn, N.Y.), and Vincent Camerada (Staten Island, N.Y.). King notched a double in his first-inning at-bat.

Antonio Moran (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was tagged with the loss in the pitcher's duel, allowing just one earned run.

Game 2

Purchase took an early lead in the first, but the Bears responded in the third inning to pull ahead. Daniel Popovitch (Brick, N.J.) sparked the rally with a leadoff single and eventually scored on George Demacopoulos' (Flushing, N.Y.) hit. King later doubled in Justin Haluck (Plainedge, N.Y.), giving St. Joseph's a 2-1 lead. The Panthers reclaimed the advantage with three runs in the fourth and a pair between the sixth and seventh innings.

Trailing 6–2 heading into the bottom of the seventh, the Bears put together a three-run rally. Arcati came home on a double by Popovitch to cut the Purchase lead in half, and Popovitch later scored on an RBI from Haluck. The Bears pulled within one as Demacopoulos drove in Justin Alas (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) with a single. However, Purchase answered with two insurance runs in the ninth before staving off SJBK's comeback in the bottom half of the inning.

Demacopoulos led the St. Joseph's offense, finishing 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI. Haluck, King, and Popovitch all had two-hit showings. Camden Wallace (Riverhead, N.Y.) tossed 3.1 innings as he dropped to 1-1 on the season.

The Bears step away from Skyline play during the week, taking on Baruch College on Tuesday, April 14 at 3:30 pm from Bronx Community College's Ohio Field.
