YAPHANK, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, New York (Brooklyn) baseball team fell 0-4 and 3-13 to SUNY Old Westbury from Lasorda Legacy Park on Friday afternoon.
The day began with Senior Day ceremonies, celebrating the careers of Vincent Camerada (Staten Island, N.Y.), Mike Dedella (Pemberton, N.J.), William King (Springfield Gardens, N.Y.), Christopher Stegmuller (Baldwin, N.Y.), Matt Arcati (Brooklyn, N.Y.), and Nicholas Mirabella (Whitestone, N.Y.).
Game 1
The Panthers took an early lead in the first inning and added two runs in the third following an RBI single to left and a St. Joseph's error. Old Westbury extended the lead to 4-0 in the fifth on a wild pitch to cap the scoring.
The Bears were limited to two hits in the contest, coming from Stegmuller and Justin Haluck (Plainedge, N.Y.). Haluck also added a stolen base. On the mound, Mirabella struck out two over 5.2 innings in his final collegiate start.
Game 2
Old Westbury opened the second game with two home runs in the first inning, adding runs in the second, third, and fourth to take a 5-0 lead. The Panthers homered twice more in the fifth before hitting their fifth home run of the game in the sixth to extend the lead to 10-0.
SJBK got on the board in the bottom of the sixth. RBI singles from King and Daniel Popovitch (Brick, N.J.) helped the Bears trim the deficit to 10-3.
The Panthers scored one in the seventh and a pair in the ninth to confirm the 13-3 result.
King had a 2-for-4 game with an RBI and a run scored. Stegmuller and Arcati also had hits, with the later scoring a run. Dedella had five strikeouts in the deficit.
