Sepulveda's Six Points Lifts Men's Soccer Past Medgar Evers

Box Score

NEW YORK — Freshman Joseph Sepulveda (East Elmhurst, N.Y./Bayside) played a part in four scores and tallied his first two collegiate goals in the process to lead the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's soccer team (4-9) to a 5-2 non-conference victory over borough rivals Medgar Evers College (0-10) on Monday evening at Randall's Island.

Four different Bears found the back of the net and seven recorded a point in the complete team effort that snapped a three-game skid.

How It Happened

Medgar Evers drew first blood just seven minutes in when Johnathan Sawadogo look a long pass up the left sideline and snuck a shot short side. But the Bears, who controlled play for most of the contest, seized control rattling off three quick tallies in less than seven minutes.

Sepulveda knotted the game just past the 20-minute mark receiving a pass at the top of the box and fired a bending shot that found the upper right 90. Five minutes later, Sepulveda sent a long through ball that set up Mateusz Georges (Brooklyn, N.Y./New Utrecht) for a 1v1 attempt against the goalie that he buried for his sixth of the season. Just a few minutes later, a corner kick from Thomas Mastoras (Flushing, N.Y./Francis Lewis) set up a header attempt for Sergio Larios (Woodside, N.Y./William C. Bryant) that was deflected in by Brandon Georges (Brooklyn, N.Y./New Utrecht) to push the Bears lead to 3-1.

A Cougar goal less than 10 minutes before intermission brought about a one-goal game at halftime. The Bears outshot the visitors 5-0 over the first 15 minutes of the second stanza before padding their lead in the 63rd minute as Sepulveda scored his second of the game putting away a rebound off a free kick attempt by Kenneth Garcia (Elmhurst, N.Y/Bayside)

Garcia would join the scoring in the waning minutes firing a shot from the top of the box set up by Sepulveda.

For the Bears

  • With his two assists, Sepulveda moved into a tie for second among the Skyline leaders at six helpers.
  • Finding the back of the net in three of the last four games, Garcia leads the league with 11 goals scored.
  • Eric Santiago Torres (Woodside, N.Y./Forest Hills), Larios, and Mastoras each logged assists in the victory.
  • Alejandro Oliveros (Brooklyn, N.Y./Grover Cleveland) needed just one save to earn the victory in goal as the Bears maintained a 25-9 shot advantage and allowed just three shots on goal.
  • SJC also held a 10-2 edge in corners.

Next Up for the Bears

The Bears will return to Skyline Conference play and travel to sibling rivals SJC Long Island on Wednesday (Oct. 10). Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. in Patchogue, N.Y. with live stats available on SJCBears.com
