Softball Closes Home-Opening Weekend 3-1; Levels Record With Sweep of John Jay

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) softball team rang 23 hits and struck out 15 batters over a doubleheader sweep of John Jay College, 8-0 and 5-1, on Sunday afternoon at Gil Hodges Field. Sarah Kampuries (Ozone Park, N.Y./John Adams) finished the day 5-for-8 with two RBI and four runs scored. Victoria Mahoney (Allenwood, N.J./Saint John Vianney) struck out eight in a five-inning shutout and Madison Erhardt (Baltimore, Md./Dulaney) worked a seven-inning complete game, striking out a career-high seven.

The Basics

  • Final Scores: St. Joseph's 8, John Jay 0 (5 inn); St. Joseph's 5, John Jay 1
  • Records: St. Joseph's (5-5), John Jay (0-2)
  • Location: Brooklyn, N.Y. — Gil Hodges Field

Game 1: St. Joseph's 8, John Jay 0 (5 inn.)

SJC Starters: Csikortos (SS), Kampuries (LF), Wainwright (3B), Gentile (1B), Whalen (C), Rancel (CF), Quintana (2B), Mahoney (P), Finnerty (RF)

  • SJC scored five quick runs in the first, all coming with two outs. Maria Gentile (Brooklyn, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall) opened the scoring with an RBI single that scored Kampuries who singled earlier in the frame. Kelsie Whalen and Stephanie Rancel (Middle Village, N.Y./Christ the King) followed with singles setting up a two-run double by Nicole Quintana (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep).
  • The Bears tacked on a solo run in the second on a Whalen double giving Mahoney more than enough run support as she silenced the Bloodhound bats to just four hits through five and allowed no runners past second.
  • In the fifth, Quintana led off with a single and Mahoney followed with a walk, both advancing to scoring position with a sacrifice and Kampuries delivered them both home with a two-out double to enact the run rule.

Game 2: St. Joseph's 5, John Jay 1

SJC Starters: Csikortos (SS), Kampuries (LF), Wainwright (3B), Gentile (1B), Whalen (DP), Rancel (CF), Quintana (2B), Fielding (C), Finnerty (RF); Erhardt (P)

  • The Bears used another big frame in the first to take control from the outset scoring three runs—all with two outs—and threatened for more leaving the bases loaded. With the bases full, Rancel opened the scoring with a two-run single and after a Quintana walk re-loaded the bases, Gabriella Fielding () singled up the middle to score Whalen.
  • Erhardt worked a near perfect first three innings before a leadoff single in the fourth broke the short no-hit bid. Ashley Quinones would deliver the Bloodhounds only run on the day to spoil the shutout
  • SJC got the run back in the bottom half of the fourth on a Gentile double down the left field line and tacked on an insurance run in the sixth on a Daniela Trani () grounder.
  • Erhardt fired perfect frames in the fifth and sixth and scattered a pair of hits in the seventh to go the distance and earn her second win of the season in the circle.
