Softball Season Ends in Skyline First Round With 2-0 Loss to Farmingdale State

Box Score

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. — Farmingdale State College avenged their only shutout of the season handing the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) softball team a 2-0 loss in a swift pitchers' duel in the first round of the 2018 Skyline Conference Championship.

Junior Victoria Mahoney (Allenwood, N.J./Saint John Vianney) fired a no-hitter for three innings and finished with seven strikeouts, but the Bears seventh-inning rally loading the bases would fall short.

The Basics

  • Final Scores: Farmingdale State 2, St. Joseph's 0
  • Records: Farmingdale State (16-17), St. Joseph's (12-19)
  • Location: Farmingdale, N.Y.

How it Happened

  • A Nicole Quintana (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) bunt single in the second beating out a sacrifice attempt was the lone hit for either squad in the first three frames.
  • The Rams finally got to Mahoney in the fourth and knocked three singles to load the bases and scored the game's opening run on a Sierra Cardenales sac fly.
  • Farmingdale added another in the fifth after Kimberly Basile's leadoff double set the table for a two-out RBI-single by Lexie Collard.
  • Megan Finnerty (Whitestone, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) led off the sixth win a single—just SJC's second hit of the contest—and reached third on a pair of sacrifices, but the Bears couldn't deliver her home.
  • SJC strung together their best effort in the seventh, with Kelsie Whalen (Florence, N.J./Notre Dame), Sarah Kampuries (Ozone Park, N.Y./John Adams), and Quintana knocking three straight singles to load the bases with no outs, but after a strikeout, the threat ended on a double play. Stephanie Rancel (Middle Village, N.Y./Christ the King) appeared to score Whalen on a sacrifice fly, but was called out on appeal for leaving early.

For the Bears

  • Battling through a cold, Victoria Mahoney had another strong effort in the circle, striking out seven over six innings pitched, allowing five hits, one walk and two earned runs.
  • Nicole Quintana was the only Bear with a multi-hit game with a 2-for-3 effort on bunt singles.
  • Sarah Kampuries (1-for-2, BB), Megan Finnerty (1-for-2) and Kelsie Whalen (1-for-3) collected the other hits for the Bears.

Next Up for the Bears

  • The Bears wrap up their 2018 campaign with a 12-19 overall mark and their first Skyline postseason appearance.
