PURCHASE, N.Y. — Seniors Danielle Bourne (Brooklyn, N.Y./Christ the King) and Alex Helfant (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy International) were the lead finishers for the St. Joseph's University, N.Y. – Brooklyn cross country teams as they took part at the Purchase College Invitational on Saturday morning; kicking off the 2024 season. The women's team earned a sixth-place finish while the men came in seventh.
Borne completed the women's 5k course in 25:34, good for 13th place overall and sixth place among Skyline Conference participants. Kristen Donovan (Maspeth, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) and Joell McKeon (Narrowsburg, N.Y./Sullivan West) crossed the finish line in 30:21 and 30:54 respectively. Newcomer Gabriella Cinque (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) and senior Elizabeth Yu (Vista, Calif./Rancho Bueno Vista) rounded out the top five with times of 33:11 and 33:30.
Helfant's 38:19 finish on the men's 8k course placed him inside the top 25. Miguel Toribio (Brooklyn, N.Y./Williamsburg Prep) and Tariq Belma (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) each completed the race in 39:23. Joshua Gordon (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) and Noah Gray (Fishers, Ind./Deane Bozeman) had finishes of under an hour.
