BROOKLYN, N.Y. — St. Joseph's University, New York (Brooklyn) has appointed Lusmer 'Lucy' Morel, MS, ATC as head athletic trainer. In her new role, Morel will lead the Bears' sports medicine efforts, providing medical coverage, rehabilitation, and injury prevention for all 11 intercollegiate athletic teams.
"Lucy comes to St. Joseph's University, Brooklyn after most recently serving as the Head Athletic Trainer at Archbishop Stepinac High School and was an NCAA Division III student-athlete at Ithaca College. Her focus on student-athlete care and knowing how this impacts the student-athlete experience was pivotal to our committee during our search," commented Director of Athletics and Recreation Megan Valentine, adding "we are excited to have her join our athletics program!"
"I'm incredibly excited and grateful for the opportunity to join St. Joseph's University as head athletic trainer," remarked Morel. "It's an honor to work with such a dedicated community, and I look forward to supporting our student-athletes in reaching their full potential both on and off the field. Let's have a great season, go Bears!"
Morel arrives at St. Joseph's following four years as head athletic trainer at Archbishop Stepinac High School in White Plains, N.Y., where she provided care for more than 300 student-athletes across 20 sports, ranging from football in the fall to basketball and ice hockey in the winter to baseball and rugby in the spring. While at Stepinac, she also worked with Professional Physical Therapy in White Plains to support patients ranging from youth athletes to older adults.
Prior to that, she spent two years as an assistant athletic trainer at Brophy College Preparatory in Phoenix, supervising medical coverage for 21 varsity sports and assisting with concussion management programs. She also gained outreach experience with AT Direct Sports Medicine, covering large-scale tournaments throughout Arizona with more than 500 participants. Her foundation in athletic training began at Ithaca College, where she worked as a student trainer with the football, women's basketball, and wrestling programs.
A cum laude graduate of Ithaca, Morel earned her bachelor's degree in athletic training while competing for the Bombers' track and field team, capturing five conference titles between 2016 and 2019 in the indoor 60 meters and outdoor 100 meters and 4×100 relay across the Empire 8 and Liberty League. She also collected academic awards from the Liberty League and USTFCCCA.
She went on to complete her Master of Science in Athletic Training at A.T. Still University in Mesa, Arizona., where her thesis examined hip-injury patient, injury, and treatment characteristics in athletic training clinics.
In addition to her clinical career, Morel has demonstrated a strong commitment to service and mentorship. She co-chaired the Interprofessional Collaboration Committee at A.T. Still, dedicated time as a volunteer athletic trainer for youth and community programs in Arizona and New York, and offered free physicals through the non-profit Corbin's Legacy.
