NEW YORK — Jeremias Martinez (Elmhurst, N.Y./Newtown) of the St. Joseph's University, N.Y. – Brooklyn men's volleyball team was named Skyline Conference Rookie of the Week per the league's weekly release on Wednesday morning.
Martinez, the squad's first weekly honoree of the season, is the program's first Rookie of the Week since Tim Driscoll was tabbed with the honor in 2018; ultimately becoming the Skyline's Rookie of the Year.
Martinez recorded his first collegiate double-doubles as the Bears posted a 4-1 week, doing so in victories over Bryn Athyn and Old Westbury. His 28 kills against the Lions marked a career-high for the first-year, hitting at a .509 clip, while bringing up 10 digs. The right side had 26 kills and a season-best 20 digs on Sunday at the Panthers. Martinez had double-figure kills in all but one contest during the week.
By the end of Sunday's tri-match, Martinez was a kill shy of reaching 200 for the season, which he since eclipsed on Monday night vs. Ramapo, and places inside the league top five in the category.
The Bears host Manhattanville University on Wednesday, March 19 at 7pm before facing New Jersey City University and St. Joseph's (Long Island) on Saturday, March 22 at 11am and 1pm.
