NEW YORK — For the second time in as many weeks, Jeremias Martinez (Elmhurst, N.Y./Newtown) of the St. Joseph's University, N.Y. – Brooklyn men's volleyball team was named the Skyline Conference Rookie of the Week, as announced by the league office on Tuesday morning.
Martinez continued to pace the Bears' attack producing 48 kills over four matches last week, averaging four kills per set. Of his weekly total, 30 occurred in matches against the Skyline's two New Jersey-based schools, Ramapo (14) and New Jersey City (16). He also served up six aces against the Gothic Knights, a season-best. Defensively, the first-year has 21 digs.
The team leader in kills (247) and kills per set (3.92), Martinez places fifth in the conference in both categories.
A week after being St. Joseph's Brooklyn's first Skyline Rookie of the Week honoree since the 2018 season, Martinez becomes the first student-athlete to earn back-to-back weekly league honors for the first time in the program's Skyline era (since 2016) and the third, following Alex Helfant and Leonel Bravo '24, to earn multiple honors in a single season.
The Bears will the entirety of their matches this week at home, starting on Tuesday, March 25, against SUNY Old Westbury. They will then face the Gothic Knights in the return leg on Thursday, March 27, before wrapping up the week with a tri-match against the Roadrunners and the University of Mount Saint Vincent on Saturday, March 29.
