NEWARK, N.J. — The St. Joseph's University, New York (Brooklyn) cross country team ran the NJIT Highlander Invitational on Saturday afternoon at Branch Brook Park.
The men's 8k began the day's proceedings with Ganilo Quintos (Boston, Mass.) and Guillermo Victorio (Corona, N.Y.) both placing inside the top 100 runners with times of 31:27.0 and 31:49.0, respectively. Gabriel Lopez (Forest Hills, N.Y.) at 35:18.2 and Guilermo Noriega (36:51.4) soon followed with Josha Gordon (Brooklyn, N.Y.) rounding out the Bears' top five inside of 45 minutes as the side edged SUNY Old Westbury in 16th place.
The women's team secured a ninth-place finish out of 12 teams on the 5k course later in the afternoon. Jennifer Sarji (Brooklyn, N.Y.) paced the Bears with a 33rd-place showing, clocking in at 23:02.8. Jizelle Velazquez (New York, N.Y.) led the next wave of finishers at 25:05.7, followed closely by Mercedes Perez (San Antonio, Texas) and Vivian Garcia (Eastvale, Calif.), who both completed the course under the 25-minute mark. Kristen Donovan (Maspeth, N.Y.) and Meredith Vento (Wauwatosa, Wis.) finished shortly after Garcia to secure individual finishes within the top 70.
The Bears are back at it on Saturday, October 18 at the St. Joseph's (Long Island) Invitational from Sunken Meadow State Park.
