Baseball Drops Season Finale to NYU

Box Score

LYNDHURST, N.J. — The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) baseball team remained close with New York University deadlocked 1-1 before the Violets (26-12) used a four-run eighth inning to hand the Bears a 5-1 defeat in their 2019 season finale on Saturday afternoon at Breslin Field.

The Bears finish their season at 15-21-1, showing an eight-win improvement and more than doubling their win total over their 2018 campaign.

How It Happened

The Violets drew first blood posting a solo run in the first assembling a two-out rally with Jack Elias singling home Colman Hendershot with the first of his three hits on the day.

The Bears drew even in the fourth after a leadoff single from Adam Schwartz (Staten Island, N.Y./Susan Wagner) and advancing to third on an error and a sacrifice setting up William DeLuca's (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream Central) sacrifice fly to tie the game at 1-all.

Bears starter Andrew Watters (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) and Violets starter Sam Cammisuli kept the bats silenced for most of the game as Cammisuli surrendered just three hits and Watters five through seven.

NYU drew back-to-back one-out walks followed by a hit batter to load the bases in the eighth and Cooper Halpern cleared the bases with a triple for the go-ahead runs.

Anthony Palermo (Patchogue, N.Y./Sachem North) doubled to leadoff the ninth, but Cammisuli shut down the threat going the distance and holding the Bears to four hits.

For the Bears

  • William DeLuca (1-for-3) drove in the lone run for the Bears
  • Kevin Reyes and Anthony Palermo both finished 1-for-4 and knocked the lone extra-base hits for the Bears.
  • Adam Schwartz (1-for-3) scored the lone Bears run, batting 1-for-3 with a walk. The senior caps his four-year career with 146 hits (8th all-time) and a career .315 average finishing seventh all-time in games played (133) and games started (130).
  • Andrew Watters fell to 5-5 on the mound working 7.1 innings, allowing five earned runs on six hits, striking out one.
