Freshman Hernandez has Big Day at the Plate as Baseball Swept by Old Westbury

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. — Freshman outfielder Anthony Hernandez combined for five hits and a pair of RBI in Sunday's doubleheader but the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) baseball team was swept by the College at Old Westbury, 11-4 and 14-2. The Bears fall to 0-6 (0-3 Skyline) while the Panthers improve to 4-0 (3-0 Skyline) on the young season.

Game 1: Old Westbury 11, St. Joseph's 4

  • Down 4-0 entering the fourth inning, Hernandez singled up the middle before successfully stealing his first base of the season. He scored on a sac bunt to put the Bears on the board.

  • Old Westbury extended their lead to 8-1 in their half of the fourth before taking a 10-1 advantage into the seventh.

  • With two outs and the bases loaded in the seventh Hernandez doubled over the head of the third baseman down the left-field line; driving in a pair of runners to inch closer, 10-3.

  • A defensive error in the stanza allowed the Panthers to tack on their 11th run. Kevin Reyes belted the first pitch of the ninth to left field however the Bears couldn't get any closer and fell by seven, 11-4.

  • Mike Santoriello went 5.1 in his first collegiate start on the mound, striking out four but settled for the loss.

  • Matthew Rienzi and Darius Cadle combined to allow just three hits and an unearned run in 3.2 innings of work

Game 2: Old Westbury 14, St. Joseph's 2

  • Brandon Wilson's two-run homer and a Jamal Ritter triple saw the Panthers jump out to an early 5-0 lead.

  • The Bears immediately responded in the second frame as Louis Lombardi doubled in Hernandez before he also scored to trim their deficit to three.

  • The Panthers retook their five-run advantage in the next half-inning before stretching their lead to 13-2 after a six-run third.

  • C.J. Bunnicelli (0-1) got his first start of the season. Freshman Joe Acampora came on and tossed a pair of scoreless innings in his debut outing; lasting 3.1 and with three K's.

  • Old Westbury's 14th run crossed the plate in the bottom of the sixth to seal the 14-2 result.
