Lombardi and Acampora Post Career-Highs in Strikeouts as Baseball Drops Pair to Mount Saint Mary

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
NEWBURGH, N.Y. — Junior Louis Lombardi struck out a career-high seven in 3.2 innings of relief but the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) baseball team took the loss, dropping an 8-1 decision against Mount Saint Mary College on Sunday afternoon. It was the most strikeouts by a Bear in a single game since William DeLuca's nine against Yeshiva University on March 17, 2019.

In the second game of their doubleheader, freshman Joe Acampora recorded a season-high five K's however the Bears (2-16, 1-11 Skyline) fell to the Knights (8-5, 6-4 Skyline), 5-1.

Game 1: Mount Saint Mary 8, St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) 2

The Bears jumped to an early lead with Chris Leary's single to bring home Anthony Hernandez in the first inning.

Starter C.J. Bunnicelli got off to a hot start, striking out three batters through three innings. The home half of the fourth saw the Knights get on the board as Devin Tait scored on Liam Merlin's RBI single. Merlin was then a part of a triple-steal to plate the go-ahead run before adding a third to take a 3-1 lead.

MSMC extended their lead with another three-run frame in the fifth. They then added a run in the seventh and again in the eighth, the only earned runs allowed by Lombardi, to take game one, 8-1.

DeLuca produced the lone multi-hit game by a Bear on the day, going 2-for-3 in the game courtesy of singles in the first and third innings. Justin Biordi also recorded a base knock in the contest.

Game 2: Mount Saint Mary 5, St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) 1

Headlined by a pair of triples off the bats of Ben Crowley and Justin Maldonado to drive home three runs, the Knights scored all five of their runs in the fourth inning. Of the five runs, Mike Santoriello was charged with three earned runs as he dropped to 0-4 on the season.

The Bears picked up a consolation run in the seventh after Lombardi's sac-fly scored Thomas Airey, who reached on a walk before advancing to third on Leary's single, as the game ended 5-1.

Joining Leary on the hit column was Lombardi, Hernandez, and Joe Grignon as they picked up a hit each.
