Baseball Drops Road Twinbill to Centenary

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. —  The St. Joseph's University Brooklyn baseball team (3-19) suffered a pair of non-conference road losses to Centenary University (12-14), 4-3 and 11-5, on Friday afternoon.

Game 1: Centenary 4, St. Joseph's 3

The Cyclones drew first blood in the second with a two-out double for a 1-0 lead but the Bears responded in their next at bat after Justin Biordi (Howard Beach, N.Y./Scholars' Academy) and Michael Gardener (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) led off the innings with singles and Anthony Hernandez (Selden, N.Y./Newfield) brought Biordi home on a sac fly.

The Bears tacked on two more runs in the fourth for their first lead after Lucas Collet (Toulouse, France/Lyc'ee Bellevue) scored on a wild pitch and Chris Leary (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) singled and later scored on an Abner Victor (San Pedro De Macorís, Dominican Republic/John Adams) single. Centenary scored one in the bottom half to trim the Bears' lead to 3-2, which the navy-and-gray carried into the seventh.

After a leadoff hit batter, a Cyclone one-out triple knotted the game at 3-all and two intentional walks loaded the bases to try and set up a double play to force extras, but the hosts took the opener with a walk-off walk.

Matt McHugh went six innings in a no-decision, allowing two earned runs on six hits, striking out one. Victor recorded the lone multi-hit game, finishing 2-for-3 with a RBI.

Game 2: Centenary 11, St. Joseph's 5

The Cyclones took the early lead again with a pair in the first with the Bears responding with two in the second on a Doug Paider (Glendale, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) grounder and an Omar Salcedo (New York, N.Y./LaSalle Academy) double.

St. Joseph's took a 3-2 lead on an Alex Goldberg (Centereach, N.Y./Centereach) two-out single in the third, before the hosts broke away with eight unanswered, scoring two in the third and hanging six in the fourth.

Kevin Reyes (Bronx, N.Y./AECI) led off the fifth with a double and later scored on a Collet single. Collet capped off the Bears scoring in the seventh on a delayed double steal.

Reyes, Collet, Goldberg, and Leary all knocked two hits in game two. Reyes scored twice, while Collet and Goldberg scored once. Sean Henris (Commack, N.Y./Commack) was stuck with the loss after two innings in relief, both of his runs scoring unearned with four hits. Jake McDonald tossed a scoreless frame in the sixth, striking out two.
